Drought Indicators March 1998

As of the end of February, the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) indicated there are no
areas which meet a drought condition as defined by the Drought Monitoring Task Force.
Winter precipitation statewide is currently 124% of normal. Two areas indicating less than
normal precipitation for the months of December through February include the extreme
northwest corner of the state, and north central New Mexico.
Snowpack conditions as of March 12 continue to remain favorable with most areas nearly at, or about 100%. Major reservoirs also remain in good conditions with most above the 15 year mean. The state average is currently at 109% of the 15 year mean. The Surface Water Supply Index indicates nearly average to above average surface water supplies statewide. The Weekly Ag Update is reporting range and pasture conditions across the state to be mostly fair to good. .Soil moisture is resorted as 74% adequate, 25% short, and 1% very short. Livestock conditions are in mostly good condition.
