NuMex DULCE
  • Plant October 1
  • June 5 to 15 maturity
  • Low pungency
  • Excellent from transplants

Yellow Grano type. Released in 1996. Suggested for planting October 1 for harvest June 5 to 15. NuMex DULCE was selected from NuMex STARLITE, using a chemical test to screen and select for low pungency. We believe it is the first onion variety developed through this screening technique. It was released to complement NuMex STARLITE for the sweet onion trade. NuMex DULCE is slightly lower in pungency than NuMex STARLITE, and the variability in pungency is considerably less than for most other varieties sold as sweet onions. The result is a variety that is highly dependable for low pungency. Consumer response to local sales has been excellent. NuMex DULCE is an excellent quality sweet onion. It provides the New Mexico industry a product which it can promote with confidence. NuMex DULCE is slightly deeper than NuMex STARLITE when direct seeded in the fall, but from transplant it is more nearly round. It is an excellent transplant variety. Growers of sweet onions could seed NuMex STARLITE for harvest June 1 to 10, and transplant NuMex DULCE about March 1 for harvest June 10 to 20, extending the marketing season for sweet onions. It has excellent tolerance to pink root.
